Water Mains Cleaning Machine
The brief required DPT to produce a water main cleaning system to be used on water ring mains around major cities, where access is difficult and the costs of cleaning are high.
The main selected was a predominantly 36” line, serving in the region of 1.6 million water users. Existing methods had serious drawbacks.
Swabbing with foam pigs, for example, results in the contamination of vast quantities of water that need to be reprocessed. DPT applied its patented bristle-traction system and a specially developed cleaning head that only uses small amounts of water, thus significantly reducing the amount of contaminated water. The lower volume could be returned to tankers and conventionally processed at much lower costs.
This project won DPT the 2002 IChemE Water Award for Innovation.
