Unlike conventional pigs, the movement of DPT tractors is controllable, does not depend on differential pressure, allows the free flow of fluid in either direction and offers a negligible pressure drop across the machine.

The standard method of advance is in sequential steps. Constant velocity can also be achieved by providing multiple bristle pads independently actuated in a staggered sequence out of phase with each other.
The direction of travel can be reversed, either automatically, when the tractor encounters an unpassable obstruction, or by remote command. The speed of the tractor can also be controlled. For tractors powered by pneumatic cylinders this is achieved by altering the sequence of operation of solenoid valves.
