The ShuttlePig is a self-propelled bristle-tractor which extracts its power from the pipeline flow using a specially designed turbine. The ShuttlePig is reversible and can travel with or against the flow. By achieving travelling speeds comparable to conventional pigging, it will revolutionise the operation and maintenance of pipelines.

Conventional pigging requires the provision of either subsea launching facilities or the construction of two parallel lines to allow loop-pigging. The ShuttlePig can be launched from the platform through a single line, travel against the flow, reverse the direction of travel at a determined point and return to the point of launch on the platform. The speed and towing capacity can be varied by providing an adjustable gearbox between the turbine and the traction module. Due to the fact that the ShuttlePig has a guaranteed return path, its use is inherently safer when compared with conventional pigs.
